Primavera P6 XER viewer

Open a P6 XER file without Primavera

A contractor's programme arrived as an .xer and there's no P6 licence on your desk. Upload it and read it in your browser: the Gantt chart, the logic links and the critical path, with every activity searchable.

The ScheduleLens programme viewer: an activity table beside a Gantt chart grouped by WBS, with logic links and critical activities in red.
A 149-activity demo programme in the viewer. Red bars are on the critical path.

What an XER file is

.xer is the export format of Oracle Primavera P6. It is a text file of database tables: activities, WBS, relationships, calendars and progress. To open it in P6 you need a P6 licence and a database to import it into, which is why it is hard to read for anyone outside the planning team.

ScheduleLens reads the .xer as it is, with no import step. It also reads P6 XML (.xml), Microsoft Project (.mpp and .xml) and Asta Powerproject (.pp).

What you see

Gantt chart grouped by WBS

Every activity on a timeline under its WBS heading, with the data date marked. Expand or collapse any branch.

Logic links drawn on the chart

Finish-to-start, start-to-start, finish-to-finish and start-to-finish links, so you can follow what drives what.

Critical path highlighted

Critical activities are shown in red, using the float and critical flags recorded in your file.

Search and filter

Find an activity by ID or name, or filter by status, float, WBS or critical only.

Print or save as PDF

A4 or A3 landscape, ready to attach to an email or a meeting pack.

Export to Excel

Every activity with its dates, durations, float, predecessors and successors, plus a sheet of every logic link.

The viewer is view-only: nothing in your file is changed. Each upload also gets a free schedule-quality preview; the full report with every finding is paid.

Questions

Do I need Primavera P6 installed?
No. The file is read on our servers and the programme opens in your browser. Nothing is installed on your computer and nothing is imported into a P6 database.
What if the XER holds more than one project?
The viewer opens one project per file. Baseline copies saved in the same export are set aside; of the projects left, it opens the one whose name matches the file name, otherwise the one with the most activities. To view a different project, export it from P6 on its own and upload that.
Is it really free?
Yes. Create a free account with your email or Google; no card is asked for. A free account can run 2 analyses a day, with files up to 15 MB and schedules up to 15,000 activities. Each upload opens in the viewer and gets a free quality preview; you pay only if you want the full report.
Can I edit the programme?
No. The viewer is read-only, so nothing in your file changes. To change the programme, use the software that made it.
Is the critical path the one in my file?
Yes. Float and critical flags are the values recorded in your file. Where the file recorded no float for an unfinished activity, we calculate it and mark it as calculated.
What happens to my file?
The uploaded file is deleted once it has been processed. The programme view is kept for 30 days so you can come back to it, then deleted. Subscribers who track a project keep an encrypted copy of the schedule for that; the privacy page has the detail.
